Infrastructure Technician
Job Description:
Job Title: Infrastructure Cabling Technician
Department: Installation & Service
Reports To: Director of Infrastructure
Compensation Range: $45,000 – $70,000 / Year (based on experience)
Position Overview
The Infrastructure Cabling Technician is an experienced low-voltage professional responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting structured cabling systems across commercial environments. This role requires advanced knowledge of copper and fiber cabling standards, pathway construction, physical infrastructure installation, and industry best practices. The technician ensures high‑quality workmanship, safety compliance, and exceptional customer service while completing cabling projects of varying size and complexity.
Core Responsibilities
Structured Cabling Installation
- Install, terminate, label, and test low‑voltage cabling including twisted pair (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A), coaxial, fiber optic (SM/MM), and specialty cables.
- Build and install cable pathway systems (ladder rack, tray, J‑hooks, innerduct, conduit pathways, etc.).
- Perform fire‑stopping and compliant wall/ceiling penetration work.
- Install telecommunications spaces: network cabinets/racks, backboards, grounding systems, patch panels, cable management, and associated hardware.
- Conduct cable certification testing using industry‑standard tools (Fluke, AFL, Viavi, etc.).
Infrastructure Support & Field Operations
- Interpret and work from construction drawings, blueprints, and technical documentation.
- Perform site surveys, pathway identification, and pre‑installation assessments.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safety‑compliant work environments.
- Lift up to 50 lbs., work from ladders and elevated positions, and operate hand/power tools safely.
Customer Interaction & Communication
- Provide professional, clear communication with customers regarding project status, changes, and service impacts.
- Represent the company on client job sites with professionalism and technical expertise.
Additional Duties
- Deliver rapid response and resolution to customer requests.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and supervisors.
- Accurately log time, notes, and expenses in PSA.
- Follow all PSA workflows for ticketing, documentation, and project updates.
- Participate in continuous training and improving technical skills.
- Perform other infrastructure‑related duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical Knowledge
- 3+ years of experience in low‑voltage cabling, structured cabling, or related technical field.
- Strong understanding of BICSI best practices, EIA/TIA standards, NEC and local electrical codes.
- Knowledge of telecommunications, data, CCTV, access control, and wireless infrastructure.
- Ability to work independently, troubleshoot field issues, and provide logical solutions.
Soft Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong customer service focus.
- Ability to multitask and adapt to changes in fast‑paced environments.
- Self‑motivated and dependable with strong attention to detail.
Education & Certifications (Preferred)
- High school diploma or GED.
- BICSI Installer or Technician certification.
- Fiber optic installation certifications (ETA, FOA, Corning, or equivalent).
